Certificate in Sex Therapy

Program Overview and Training Pathways

The Certificate in Sex Therapy offered by the School of Sex Therapy is a structured, graduate-level educational program designed to provide comprehensive training in psychosexual therapy. The curriculum emphasizes evidence-based practice, ethical clinical decision-making, and professional competency across the full spectrum of sexual health and psychosexual concerns.

The Certificate in Sex Therapy is offered in two distinct training tracks, allowing participants to select the pathway that best aligns with their professional goals:

  1. Education-Only Track
  2. CPST Track

Both tracks share a common first-year educational foundation, after which the pathways diverge.

General Track (EDU Track)

The General Track of the Certificate in Sex Therapy is designed for professionals who are seeking comprehensive, graduate-level training in psychosexual therapy without pursuing formal certification at this time.

This track provides participants with the full first-year educational curriculum of the Certificate in Sex Therapy, offering a rigorous and structured foundation in sex therapy theory, assessment, ethics, and clinical application. It is ideal for clinicians and allied professionals who wish to deepen their knowledge, enhance their competence, or integrate psychosexual perspectives into their existing work.

Who Is the General Track For?

The General Track is well-suited for:

  • Licensed mental health professionals seeking advanced education in sex therapy without entering a certification pathway
  • Clinicians who already hold certification through another professional organization and wish to broaden or refine their psychosexual expertise
  • Medical providers, educators, and allied professionals working in sexual health or related fields
  • Practitioners who want high-quality, structured continuing education without committing to a multi-year clinical training program
  • Professionals who are exploring whether formal certification in psychosexual therapy may become a future goal

This track is particularly appropriate for individuals who want clinical depth, ethical clarity, and professional development in psychosexual therapy within a defined academic-year structure.

Professional Value of the General Track

Completion of the General Track provides participants with meaningful academic and professional advancement in the field of psychosexual therapy. Participants will gain:

  • A comprehensive, college-level foundation in psychosexual therapy, grounded in contemporary theory, research, and evidence-informed practice.
  • Enhanced confidence and clinical competence in addressing sexual concerns ethically, professionally, and within scope of practice.
  • Practical tools, frameworks, and intervention strategies that can be directly integrated into clinical, medical, or educational settings.
  • Advanced understanding of diverse and complex psychosexual presentations, including work with marginalized populations and nuanced clinical cases.
  • Structured academic training aligned with approximately 20 ECTS credits (≈ 12 U.S. semester credits), supporting ongoing professional and academic development.

This track is designed to support both immediate application in professional practice and longer-term pathways toward advanced training and specialization in psychosexual therapy.

Important Certification Clarification

The General Track is an academic training program and does not lead directly to certification as a Certified Psychosexual Therapist (C-PST) through the International Association of Psychosexual Therapists (IAPST).

Completion of this one-year program alone does not qualify an individual for IAPST certification.

Individuals who wish to pursue IAPST certification must apply for advancement into the C-PST Track (Year Two) of the program. Admission to this track requires successful completion of a Supervision Interview, during which the applicant's clinical readiness, professional background, and preparedness for supervised practice are assessed.

Progression into the C-PST Track marks the beginning of the certification pathway and includes the completion of supervised clinical training and additional requirements as outlined by the IAPST.

Program Structure

The General Track is delivered over two academic semesters (Fall and Spring) and consists of 36 weekly sessions, each meeting for three hours of live, synchronous instruction.

In addition to scheduled class time, participants engage in structured independent learning activities, including assigned readings, written assignments, quizzes, and applied clinical exercises. Together, these components form a comprehensive program of approximately 250–300 total learning hours, aligned with 20 ECTS credits (equivalent to approximately 12 U.S. semester credits).

The program is delivered fully online and includes:

  • Weekly live, synchronous instruction led by faculty and guest experts
  • A blended learning model combining real-time teaching with asynchronous coursework and assignments
  • Applied, clinically oriented training grounded in evidence-based practice

The curriculum provides comprehensive coverage of core areas in psychosexual therapy, including sexual anatomy and physiology, assessment and treatment planning, evidence-based interventions, clinical ethics, trauma-informed care, sexual and relationship diversity, and work with complex and marginalized populations.

All sessions are held on Tuesdays from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Eastern Time, forming a structured and cohesive one-year academic sequence.
